How Long Do Solar Batteries Last?

Battery lifespan, warranty terms, throughput and capacity degradation explained.

Updated 2026-02-10

Home battery warranties are commonly written around ten years, with terms defined by years, energy throughput and retained capacity. The specifics vary by manufacturer.

How warranties are written

Most cover whichever comes first: a number of years, a total amount of energy cycled through the battery, or a drop below a stated percentage of original capacity. Read all three, because the first one you hit ends the coverage.

What affects real-world life

How deeply and how often the battery cycles, ambient temperature at the install location, and firmware and monitoring upkeep. A shaded, ventilated garage wall is kinder to a battery than a west-facing exterior wall in the valley.

Solar production, bill offset and payment comparisons vary by home, usage, roof, shading, utility rate schedule and financing terms. Nothing on this site is a guarantee of savings. Pricing comparisons depend on system size, equipment, financing structure and contract terms. Any comparison is only meaningful between comparable systems and comparable financing.
