Can I Add More Solar Panels to My Existing System?

Expanding an undersized array: what is possible, and what it depends on.

Updated 2026-02-10

Expansion is common when a household adds an EV, a heat pump or a pool after the original system was designed.

What determines feasibility

Available inverter headroom, remaining roof area with good exposure, your electrical service capacity, and your utility interconnection agreement. Increasing system size generally requires a new interconnection application.

Add to the existing system, or build a second one

If the existing inverter is near capacity or nearing end of life, a separate array with its own inverter is sometimes cheaper and cleaner than forcing an expansion. We price both when both are viable.

Solar production, bill offset and payment comparisons vary by home, usage, roof, shading, utility rate schedule and financing terms. Nothing on this site is a guarantee of savings. Pricing comparisons depend on system size, equipment, financing structure and contract terms. Any comparison is only meaningful between comparable systems and comparable financing.
